We helped to ban all forms of fossil fuel advertisements in Amsterdam! A historic win! The city is taking action after a letter from 51 local organisations, and the public initiative Reclame Fossiel Vrij, which Creatives for Climate has supported from the get-go.
This brief kicked off with 70 people in a learning session, where the activist organisation lifted the veil on the oil and gas companies who present themselves as thought leaders and experts on the energy transition, and greenwash both the public and politicians, whilst hiding the truth that their subsidies, tax cuts and emissions have only increased.
We then set about building a kickass campaign to jumpstart Fossiel Vrij NL’s citizens initiative, proposing that the Dutch government treat fossil fuels like cigarettes, and create a ban on all forms of fossil fuel advertisements and sponsorships.
And now the municipality of the City of Amsterdam will be the first in the world to do this in its public domain. This is stated in a motion by GroenLinks, which was passed on 18 December 2020, and is the first political step towards a nationwide ban … and hopefully the world follows suit!
