For the love of bees: Regenerative learning project

Through the generation of banners, posters, and other creative assets, our community helped overturn Auckland City Council’s decision to use Glyphosate—a known carcinogenic—across the city as weed killer.

The task

Help protest Auckland, NZ’s intention to use toxic chemicals as weed killer

Auckland—New Zealand’s largest city—planned on signing a long-term commitment to use Glyphosate and other toxic chemicals as a weed killer, putting the ecosystem and children’s health at risk.

The solution

A call for banners & posters to be used in meetings with—and protests against— The Auckland City Council

We kicked off the campaign with an activation webinar that was featured in the local press. In less than a week, more than 15 assets were submitted by artists living across the globe—from Amsterdam to Auckland and the United Kingdom.

The results

A rejection of city council’s plans and an amendment to the original policy

The Creatives for Climate-backed initiative took to the streets, not only with banners in their hands but with billboards strategically placed across the city! Ultimately, the council decided not to standardize weed-killing methodology across the region. Local boards were able to opt out of glyphosate use and seek out alternative methods of thermal and mechanical weed management within their budget. This outcome resulted in a massive reduction in glyphosate use in Waitākere and Manukau.
