Creatives for Climate, a nonprofit global network of creatives on a mission to use creativity to drive tangible climate action is partnering with the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to hit the ground at COP28 with a social campaign to raise awareness of greenwashing and back the call for an urgent transition away from fossil fuels. 

Oil-producing nations have historically used greenwashing tactics to prevent the UN from adopting clear language in tackling fossil fuels.

In 2023, the hottest year on record, the creative industry joins leaders across the globe to keep greenwashing out of COP.

COP28 is an opportunity for global governments to come together and agree on ambitious action on the climate crisis. Unfortunately, it is also a major opportunity for organisations to engage in greenwashing - and historically, oil-producing nations have explicitly worked to prevent the UN from adopting clear language in tackling fossil fuels.

This year the hot terms will be: unabated, and phase down vs phase out. 

Creatives for Climate is launching a campaign to call-out greenwashing at COP28 in support of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty’s call to end the expansion of fossil fuels without qualifiers or loopholes. 

Launched online on December 1st, the campaign centres around a toolkit with a greenwash detector, templates for amplification social media, speaking points and FAQS, supported by an on the ground action at COP28 with the distribution of 100 toolkits to key leaders to encourage them to speak up against greenwashing. 

The goal of the campaign is to build a public out-cry to pressure decision-makers to stay accountable and take meaningful action to stop to the extraction and production of fossil fuels.

About the Swatch

‘The Greenwash Swatch’ tool is developed in collaboration with think tank Planet Tracker and highlights different ‘shades’ of greenwashing - formatted into a handy paint swatch that fits into handbags and pockets. It provides a simple and provocative way to fuel push back on new greenwashing trends such as greencrowding, greenrinsing, and greenshifting.
